In order to support young people’s decision-making at a time of greater and more complex choices, the Department of Education and Skills (DfES) commissioned NFER to explore how young people make the educational choices required of them at ages 14 and 16. The study adds a further dimension to previous research on decision-making by exploring the ways in which, for each individual, structural contexts and individual attributes interact both before and during the decision-making process. Two waves of in-depth interviews were held with 165 young people across 14 schools between February 2005 and February 2006.
